Welcome to Hartland Abbey the historic home of the Stucley family, with its beautiful gardens and parkland leading to the sea.
Hartland Abbey was founded in 1157 in a narrow, wandering valley running inland from the wild and precipitous Atlantic coast. It was dissolved in 1539 having survived longer than any monastery in the country.
Henry VIII made a gift of the Abbey to the Sergeant of his Wine Cellar, William Abbott. The house has descended to the present owner through a series of marriages and remains a lived-in family home.
The Abbey and estate have been used as a film location, most recently in 2007 for Andrew Davies£s stunning adaptation of Jane Austen£s £Sense and Sensibility£ for BBC1. Blackpool Mill Cottage was £Barton Cottage the home of the Dashwoods. The Shell Seekers with Vanessa Redgrave and Maximillian Schell, £Water£ with Michael Caine and Billy Connolly, £A Natural History of Britain£ with Alan Titchrnarsh, and Bargain Hunt were all filmed here. The Abbey features in £England£s Thousand Best Houses£ by Simon Jenkins.
